Walk on glass Balcony rooflight.
- Multiple panel configuration
- Opaque glass
- LOCATION: OXFORDSHIRE
Glass units are delivered pre-fabricated and lifted into position using vacuum lifting equipment to avoid edge damage. The joints between units are sealed using UV-resistant structural silicone, producing a seamless appearance that allows the glass to visually merge with surrounding hard landscaping.
Large Walk on glass Basement Rooflight.
- LOCATION: LONDON
The walk on rooflight comprises a multi-layered laminated glass assembly bonded with structural interlayers to form a monolithic structural pane. The top layer — the triple-laminated glass — is specifically designed to resist imposed loads and dynamic impact.
Below this, the triple-glazed configuration incorporates two additional glass layers separated by argon-filled cavities. This structure provides exceptional thermal insulation, reducing heat loss through the glazing and preventing cold bridging between the patio and the interior basement environment.
Walk on Glass Rooflights in Basement Conversions & Patios
Bringing Light Underground
Basement conversions are a popular way to create extra living space, particularly in urban areas where above-ground extensions may be restricted. One of the greatest challenges with below-ground design is overcoming the lack of natural light. This is where rooflights play a vital role — transforming dark basements into bright, welcoming, and energy-efficient spaces.
Why Rooflights Matter in Basement Design
Natural light has a powerful effect on how a room feels. Without it, basements risk being perceived as enclosed, damp, or purely functional. By introducing rooflights, architects can:
-
Maximise daylight penetration, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
-
Improve ventilation, particularly with opening rooflight systems.
-
Enhance property value, as brighter basements are more desirable for living or working.
-
Create a sense of connection between underground rooms and outside spaces.

CURVED CLARITY: OVAL SHAPED TRIPLE GLAZED WALK-ON GLASS ROOFLIGHTS FOR SUBTERRANEAN SPACES
As architecture continues to embrace light as a building material, innovations in structural glazing have allowed designers to merge daylight, form, and function in remarkable ways. One such innovation is the oval-shaped triple-glazed walk-on rooflight — an elegant solution that combines advanced engineering with sculptural design.
Installed within patios above sub-ground rooms, these bespoke rooflights introduce daylight into spaces once confined to artificial illumination, without compromising the usability or aesthetic of the surface above. Their oval geometry softens architectural lines, creating a fluid dialogue between landscape and structure.

Walk on Rooflight Specifications & Typical Fixing Details
Triple glazed, triple laminate glass, with stainless steel or aluminium frame
Each walk on glass rooflight is constructed from triple-laminated, triple-glazed safety glass, engineered to withstand walk-on loads. The system comprises:
| Top Layer | Triple-laminated structural glass — three sheets of toughened heat-strengthened glass bonded with structural interlayers such as SentryGlas® or PVB for enhanced rigidity and residual strength. |
| Middle & Bottom Layers | A sealed triple-glazed insulating glass unit (IGU) incorporating Low-E coatings, argon gas filling, and warm-edge spacers to ensure optimum energy performance. |
| Support System | A discreet thermally broken frame fabricated from stainless steel or aluminium alloy, fully integrated into the surrounding waterproofing membrane. |
This configuration produces an exceptionally strong yet thermally efficient rooflight capable of achieving U-values as low as 0.9 W/m²·K, while maintaining transparency and optical purity.
Drainage, Sealing & Weatherproofing
A critical aspect of rooflight performance is the integration of effective drainage and waterproofing systems. Walk-on units are typically installed flush with surrounding paving on a recessed support frame incorporating:
-
Perimeter drainage channels to manage runoff and prevent water pooling.
-
EPDM or butyl compression seals ensuring long-term air and water tightness.
-
Thermally broken upstands to prevent cold bridging between structural layers.
The frame interfaces with the roof’s waterproof membrane, creating a continuous, weatherproof envelope between patio and interior. Periodic maintenance ensures drainage outlets remain free from debris.

Decorative & Anti-slip Glass Options
Glass flooring and walk-on glazing systems can be enhanced through a variety of surface treatments and interlayer options to achieve the required balance of safety, privacy, aesthetics, and light transmission.
Anti-slip glass treatments provide independently tested slip resistance for applications such as floors, stair treads, landings, bridges, and rooflights, while maintaining a clean, contemporary appearance.
Decorative finishes including sandblasted opaque surfaces, ceramic fritted dot patterns, bespoke graphics, and custom designs can be incorporated to improve privacy, reduce visual transparency, or create a distinctive architectural feature.
Laminated glass can also be manufactured with coloured interlayers, offering a wide spectrum of colours and levels of translucency to complement the overall design scheme while retaining the structural integrity and performance of the glazing assembly.

Technical Questions - Walk on Rooflights
Are structural calculations provided for walk-on rooflights?
Yes. Structural calculations can be provided on request and are tailored to the specific project requirements, loading criteria, and support conditions.
How are support requirements determined for a walk-on rooflight?
Edge support requirements, glass specification, and deflection criteria are assessed individually for each project to ensure compliance with structural and safety standards.
How is a walk-on rooflight weatherproofed?
Our walk-on rooflights are fully sealed using structural silicone or supplied with a thermally broken aluminium perimeter frame, providing a durable and weatherproof installation.
Are walk-on rooflights quality checked before delivery?
Yes. All rooflights are factory assembled and undergo quality control checks before being dispatched to site.
Can a walk-on rooflight be installed flush with the surrounding surface?
Yes. Walk-on rooflights are designed to be installed flush with the finished floor or roof level, creating a seamless appearance.
What types of structures can support a walk-on rooflight?
Our rooflights can be integrated into timber, steel, or concrete support structures, provided the supporting structure is correctly designed and weatherproofed.
How should a walk-on rooflight be cleaned?
For routine cleaning, use non-abrasive cleaning products and soft cloths or brushes. Abrasive tools and harsh chemicals should be avoided to protect the glass and anti-slip finish.
