LIDL Store
The new Lidl was built on 11th century Irish-Viking ruins in Dublin. It lies in what is thought to have been a Hiberno-Norse suburb of Dublin.
The Lidl now features a glass window in the floor allowaing customers to see the preserved domestic structure below.
Project
A series of high specification walk-on structural glass floors were installed to create a visually striking connection between the modern retail space and the archaeological remains preserved beneath. The installation formed part of a unique architectural concept that allows shoppers to view historic structures through the floor while moving through the store. Each glass panel was fabricated from triple-laminated, toughened safety glass with a high-load specification, designed to accommodate constant public foot traffic in compliance with commercial safety standards.
The glass units were set within stainless steel perimeter frames with flush joints. Integrated lighting beneath the glass enhances visibility of the excavation area below without creating glare or reflection on the surface.
This project showcases the versatility of walk-on glass technology, combining robust engineering with cultural preservation to deliver an engaging and educational in-store experience.

The Challenge
The Lidl Dublin project required the design and installation of large-format walk-on structural glass floors capable of delivering viewing panels into the archaeological space below while supporting heavy pedestrian & trolley loading within a busy public environment. The glazing system needed to achieve high structural performance and slip resistance, while integrating seamlessly within the external flooring layout. Due to the commercial nature of the development, the installation also demanded durable low-maintenance materials and precise detailing to withstand continuous public use without compromising the clean architectural appearance of the scheme.
The Solution
Structural Glass Design engineered and installed bespoke multi-panel walk-on structural glass floors using laminated toughened glass assemblies specifically designed for commercial pedestrian loading applications. The recessed glazing systems were manufactured with slip-resistant finishes and minimal visible framing to create a flush integration within the surrounding tiled surfaces while maximising light transmission into the areas below. Precision structural detailing ensured long-term durability and performance in a high-traffic public environment, successfully combining architectural design with robust structural glazing technology for the completed Lidl Dublin development.
