Gewen Island Crystal Walkway
Bespoke structural glass display boxes installed for the redevelopment of Dublin’s iconic Windmill Lane recording studios, combining minimal detailing with high-performance glazing.
Project
At the Crystal Walkway on Gewen Island, Qatar, a series of 180 walk-on glass floors filled with crystal were installed to create a visually dazzling pedestrian experience that literally sparkles underfoot.
Each panel was constructed from triple-laminated, toughened safety glass, ensuring full structural integrity while showcasing the brilliant Egyptian crystal within the flooring produced by our partners on the project, Asfour Crystal International. In addition to the floors, the project featured large one-of-a-kind crystal clocks, combining functional timepieces with an artistic display that interacts with natural and ambient lighting.
This installation exemplifies the fusion of structural engineering, bespoke glass design, and decorative artistry, delivering a landmark experience that is both immersive and visually striking.

The Challenge
The Gewen Island Project required the development of bespoke walk-on structural glass display boxes and precision-engineered structural glass crystal clocks capable of combining architectural elegance with long-term structural performance. The installation demanded exceptionally high levels of transparency and visual clarity to showcase the illuminated crystal features beneath the glazing, while also accommodating pedestrian loading within a public environment. Particular attention was required to achieve minimal visible framing, seamless integration within the surrounding finishes and the accurate alignment of the structural glass clock elements, all while maintaining durability, safety and slip resistance.
The Solution
Structural Glass Design engineered and installed custom laminated toughened walk-on glass assemblies specifically designed to provide both structural integrity and maximum optical clarity. The recessed glass display boxes were manufactured using precision structural glazing techniques to create flush walkable surfaces with minimal framing, allowing uninterrupted views of the crystal installations below. In parallel, bespoke structural glass crystal clocks were carefully fabricated and integrated into the scheme using specialist detailing and support systems to achieve a clean frameless appearance. The completed project successfully combined structural glazing technology, architectural lighting and decorative crystal craftsmanship within a striking public feature installation.
