Snow Leopard Habitat, Chester Zoo
Structural Glass Design supplied and installed specialist anti-reflective glazing systems for the Chester Zoo snow leopard habitat, providing visitors with exceptionally clear views while reducing reflections within the enclosure. The bespoke glazing solution was engineered to support animal welfare, durability and long-term performance within a demanding public environment.
Project
At the Snow Leopard habitat, a series of high-performance structural glass panels were installed using Pilkington OptiView™ anti-reflective glass. The installation required meticulous engineering to meet both structural loading and animal safety standards, ensuring the glass could withstand high impact forces while providing an uninterrupted viewing experience for visitors. The OptiView coating reduces surface reflection to less than 1%, virtually eliminating glare and allowing natural colors and textures within the habitat to be seen with remarkable fidelity. The result is a seamless visual barrier that enhances visitor engagement, preserves animal welfare through reduced stress-inducing reflections, and exemplifies the synergy between advanced glass technology and zoological design.

The Challenge
The Chester Zoo habitat project required the development of specialist glazing systems that would provide visitors with clear uninterrupted views into the snow leopard enclosure while maintaining the welfare and natural behaviour of the animals. A key challenge was the need to minimise visible reflections within the glazing which can cause snow leopards to see their own image, potentially creating stress and behavioural issues within the habitat. The glazing also needed to withstand heavy public use, environmental exposure and long-term operational demands while integrating seamlessly within the landscaped enclosure design.
The Solution
Structural Glass Design supplied and installed bespoke anti-reflective glazing systems specifically engineered for the operational and welfare requirements of the Chester Zoo snow leopard habitat. Using high-performance laminated glass with specialist anti-reflective coatings, the installation significantly reduced visual reflections within the glazing, allowing the animals to interact naturally with their environment while providing visitors with exceptionally clear viewing conditions. Minimal framing and precision structural detailing helped create an immersive viewing experience while delivering the durability, safety and long-term performance required within a busy public zoological environment.
