Doncaster Dome

Structural Glass Design supplied and installed a bespoke polycarbonate rooflight system as part of the refurbishment of Doncaster Dome, enhancing natural daylight levels within the landmark leisure facility. The lightweight high-performance rooflight solution was engineered to provide long-term durability, thermal efficiency and minimal maintenance within a busy public environment.

Project

At the Doncaster Dome, a complex rooflight glazing system was designed and installed to transform the building’s upper structure with a bold and efficient daylighting solution. The installation features a series of large-format,polycarbonate rooflight panels, engineered to span significant distances while maintaining exceptional weather resistance.

The rooflight assembly was supported on a precision-fabricated aluminium framework, designed to accommodate building movement and ensure long-term waterproof integrity. The result is a bright glazing system that enhances the architectural character of the Dome, improving user comfort and creating a striking interplay of light across the internal leisure areas. The project demonstrates how modern alternative materials can be integrated into large civic buildings to deliver both performance and aesthetic impact.

The Challenge

The Doncaster Dome project required the refurbishment and replacement of large overhead rooflight systems within one of the region’s busiest public leisure and entertainment facilities. The challenge was to improve natural daylight levels and modernise the appearance of the building while providing a lightweight, durable and thermally efficient roofing solution suitable for a high-traffic public environment. The installation also required careful coordination within an operational leisure complex, with the new system needing to deliver long-term weather resistance, low maintenance requirements and reliable performance across large roof spans.

The Solution

Structural Glass Design supplied and installed a bespoke polycarbonate rooflight system specifically engineered for the operational and architectural requirements of the Doncaster Dome redevelopment. Using high-performance multiwall polycarbonate panels integrated within a precision aluminium framing system, the installation delivered improved natural light transmission, reduced structural weight and enhanced thermal performance compared to traditional glazing alternatives. The completed system provided a durable and cost-effective roofing solution that modernised the appearance of the Dome while ensuring long-term reliability within a demanding public leisure environment.
